As I've been working through getting rid of our excess stuff, I've been really thinking through my wardrobe. I've been pretty good at keeping my closet small - when I spent two months abroad in 2010, I took two duffle bags with me, one for clothes/toiletries, and one for art supplies and treats I brought back for family and friends. I realized how much less I really needed. It was incredibly refreshing!
Last summer was also pretty transformative for my wardrobe. I worked through needing work-appropriate attire (though a creative office is quite casual, I wasn't going to come to work in social club t-shirts!). I also obtained several versatile classic pieces for wedding-related events and our honeymoon that finally felt me and also very grown-up.
A year later, I've noticed my friends truly know what's in my closet without ever stepping in it. And the best part? They love it! At a bachelorette party this past weekend, I said I had brought my green peplum top ("Britt, I love that on you!"), while I was currently wearing my chambray shirt with pink pants ("You wore those to your bachelorette! Those are such great pants!"). Seriously, the best feeling ever. I finally know what fits my body, and what fits who I am.
So here are my personal 12 must-haves; mostly staples and a couple of statements:
- Striped Shirt
- Grey Tee
- Dark wash skinnies
- Pixie pants (we talked about these recently!)
- Versatile bag (work/errands/hanging out with friends)
- Utility jacket
- Statement necklace (make your outfit an instant evening/party look)
- Statement dress (I have one very similar in coral that I wear to most showers and weddings)
- Nude flats
- Nude wedges (so Kate Middleton)
- Silky blouse
It makes packing for trips so easy, and getting dressed in the morning is (typically) a snap. I really recommend that you consider down-sizing your closet! I'm considering putting together another post with some questions to help you sort through what you have... what do you think? Is that something you would use?
